Message from the Chair of the Organising Committee

The New Zealand Association of Breast Cancer Research (NZABC®) Incorporated will host a one-day virtual NZ Breast Cancer Symposium (NZBCS) on Friday 19th November 2021 from 8:00am – 4:30pm. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the face-to-face triennial symposium NZBCS-2020 has been postponed to November 2022. To keep the momentum going, the NZABC® has decided to organise a virtual, shorter meeting this year before next year's major meeting.

The virtual NZBCS-2021 is the first of such kind organised in New Zealand by the NZABC®, a non-profit scientific organisation in New Zealand for the promotion of breast cancer research. Breast cancer has now become the most commonly diagnosed cancer and affects more than 2.3 million people each year in the world. Organizing annual academic conferences is one of the core activities of the NZABC®.

Although it is a one-day virtual conference, the NZBCS-2021 programme is content-rich, consisting of up to 80 oral talks and many e-poster presentations. We believe that the virtual NZBCS-2021 will provide an unique opportunity for all breast cancer researchers in New Zealand and other countries to meet, disseminate research findings, and discuss the latest progress in breast cancer research, treatments and after-treatment care.

The aim of the NZABC® is to promote basic and clinical research on breast cancer, stimulate national and international collaborations, and expedite the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical applications, for improved treatment and life quality of those affected with breast cancer. Let's be "united for a breast cancer cure through research".

Statement on Māori Participation and Presentation

 The New Zealand Association of Breast Cancer Research (NZABC®) Incorporated was established in 2017 and is a science focused, non-profit volunteer organisation that promotes basic and clinical research on breast cancer and hosts networking events to stimulate national and international collaborations. We recognise and promote Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
    NZABC® actively promotes diversity of thought on the committee and creates an inclusive culture. Breast cancer can affect anyone in Aotearoa, but Māori women have a much higher incidence rate and worse treatment outcomes. We must encourage the voice of anyone and everyone to be heard. To allow this, the Association must represent the entire research community in New Zealand.
    Due to COVID-19, we have had to make changes in our events. We will be hosting a one-day virtual workshop on the 19th of November 2021. In addition, we are planning the 2nd international three-day face-to-face conference in November 2022 with a session committed to Māori health.
    We always welcome new committee members and keynote speakers and will continually reach out to encourage the widest range of scientists and medical experts to contribute to our events.
    In the inaugural NZBCS-2017 conference, Māori researchers were included in the organising committee and a pōwhiri (traditional Māori welcoming ceremony) was conducted. In the 2019 Hamilton Workshop, a keynote was delivered by Irene Kereama-Royal, a Māori researcher. Dr Valance Smith from Auckland University of Technology will open the NZBCS-2021 with karakia (blessing of event), followed with a mihi whakatau (formal speech of welcome).

Breast cancer research has made significant progress in New Zealand in recent years. Many high-quality and innovative research projects have been funded by the HRC Breast Cancer Research in New Zealand partnership programme, which is supported by the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and the Breast Cancer Cure. We have invited some of the PIs of these funded projects to deliver talks on their current breast cancer research. These talks cover a wide range of breast cancer research and management from early detection, therapeutic target discovery, to personalised treatment through precision medicine and surgery. It has been known for a long time that breast cancer varies in race and ethnicity. We have talks that address these differences and ethnical disparities in incidence rates and outcomes.
